Signs Of The Times

The following is taken from the May 1998 issue of Signs of the Times Magazine.

Werner Tool, the oldest of the three-faced mechanical sign companies,......... ...offers Tri-Vision® signs.  Their louvers come 6-and 12 in. wide, in lengths from 18 in. to 32 ft.

Tri-Vision's® ``Pic-Turn" -style solid louvers are made of heavy-gauge aluminum and come epoxy-primed for immediate use; Tri-Vision's® ``Pos-Turn"-style changeable-face louvers are made of rigid, galvanized steel and also come primed.  According to the company, changeable louvers can be removed or installed onsite, using only one person.

Tri-Vision® louvers are powered by a positive-drive, miter-gear, drive assembly that comes pre-assembled in the base of the unit.  Louver movement is controlled by Werner's Model 1200 display Controller.  With the controller, you can set variable-speed rotation, variable dwell speed, and adjust the rotation to forward or reverse.

Each Tri-Vision® sign comes with a fully self-supported truss-box configuration.  Consequently, you don't have to provide additional support to a billboard's structure before installing a Tri-Vision® sign.  Assembly only requires bolting the frame directly to the billboard structure, which then serves as the frame's backdrop and prevents light from coming through the louvers.

Once the frame is in place, each louver is installed by slipping it over the pin and header of the unit, and placing it onto the corresponding pan attached to the drive train of the base.  Remarkably, a 14 x 48-ft. Tri-Vision® sign can be installed onto an existing billboard in less than a day.

Should you need it, Werner will provide onsite installation supervision.  Also, Werner offers to maintain the Tri-Vision® signs, or will train your staff on maintenance procedures.  Essentially, a Tri-Vision® sign's biannual maintenance requires: lubricating bearings, adjusting gears, checking louver alignment and checking the power pack.

Co., Inc., Detroit, MI, offers both Pic-Turn and Pos-Turn versions of its displays.  Pic-Turn signs incorporate solid louvers and are appropriate for applications in which graphics don't need to be changed frequently; Pos-Turn signs, on the other hand, have changeable-face louvers made from lightweight, galvannealed steel. (B) Movement like this is what draws viewers' attention to three-faced mechanical displays.  In addition to this traditional rotation-where all louvers turn at once-some manufacturers offer other rotation options.  You may, for example, have the louvers turn from left to right, right to left, from the center outward, etc.  This sign features a Werner Tool & Mfg. Co., Inc. (Detroit, MI) Tri-Vision® display. (C)  Detroit, MI, in addition to being home to the Red Wings, is home to Werner Tool & Mfg. Co. and its Tri-Vision® three-faced mechanical displays.  According to the company, single-unit Tri-Vision® signs have been created with copy areas as tall as 32 ft., and as long as 100 ft.  The signs are sized to fit your space and structural requirements.
